Merida to become a princess tomorrow, but not without controversy
Merida from the hit Disney/Pixar film Brave is going to become an official princess tomorrow at the Magic Kingdom, but many parents feel that her new look was not necessary and are speaking out about it, even starting a petition. Merida received a makeover for her new princess look, with wider eyes, thinner body and even that famous red frizzy hair is gone.
Parents enjoyed the fact that Merida was a step in a different direction from the typical gorgeous, falling in love with my prince princess. Now that Disney has changed her, it has caused a bit of an uproar. Even a petition over at Change.org, which has received over 19,000 signatures.
Here is an excerpt from the petition:
The redesign of Merida in advance of her official induction to the Disney Princess collection does a tremendous disservice to the millions of children for whom Merida is an empowering role model who speaks to girls’ capacity to be change agents in the world rather than just trophies to be admired. Moreover, by making her skinnier, sexier and more mature in appearance, you are sending a message to girls that the original, realistic, teenage-appearing version of Merida is inferior; that for girls and women to have value — to be recognized as true princesses — they must conform to a narrow definition of beauty.
What do you think? Do you think Disney should have left Merida alone? Or do you think these people are overreacting?
