Astrotower to be removed from Coney Island due to safety concerns

I shared a video of this on our Facebook and thought it was unbelievable.  The Astrotower at Coney Island is an old observation tower that has not been in use for more than three years.  The tower became a safety hazard as it began swaying back and fourth.  The tower, which opened up back in 1964, once offered riders a 360-degree views of the Atlantic Ocean and Brooklyn.

“We’ve come to the conclusion that the most expedient way and the fastest way to get the park up and running and be safe for all New Yorkers is to remove part of the tower immediately,” Department of Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri said.

Crews began tearing down the tower around 2 a.m. on the 4th of July

Check out the video above of the tower swaying for yourself.
