guardians_poster_via_marvel There was much speculation of the past several months whether or not Marvel’s new action-packed flick ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ would be a hit at the box office.  Well if the opening weekend is any sign of things to come, Marvel has a smash hit on their hands. The movie opened with an August record of $94 million weekend in a total of  4,080 theaters.  This makes it the third biggest opening of 2014 so far, just behind Transformers: Age of Extinction ($100 million) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95 million). Overseas the film made an estimated $66.4 million bringing the grand total to $160.4 million.

Here is the top 5 from over the weekend: 1. Guardians of the Galaxy – $94 million (new) 2. Lucy – $18.3 million ($79.6 million total) 3. Get On Up – $14 million (new) 4. Hercules — $10.7 million ($52.3 million total) 5. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes– $8.7 million Friday ($189.3 million total)
