How to Train Your Dragon 2 Soars Past $500,000,000 At Global Box Office
Although not directly related to theme park news, there has been a lot of talk and rumors about a ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ theme park attraction coming somewhere to Universal Studios for quite some time now, and this is further proof that it should and probably will eventually happen.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 soared past the $500 million mark at the global box office. The highly acclaimed sequel is now not only one of the best reviewed films of the year, but also 2014’s highest grossing animated film to-date and one of the top ten grossing films of the year in any genre.
“We have been incredibly proud of How to Train Your Dragon 2 from the moment we saw it and we’re thrilled that it has been embraced around the world with such enthusiasm,” said Chief Marketing Officer Dawn Taubin. “This film is not only an artistic and technical achievement for DreamWorks, but its strength at the global box office proves that audiences are embracing it as one of the most entertaining films of the year.”
“This is a tremendous result for such a deserving, critically acclaimed film,” said Chris Aronson, President Domestic Theatrical Distribution, 20th Century Fox. “We look forward to riding Dragon 2 to greater box office heights.”
Through Thursday morning, How to Train Your Dragon 2 has grossed $170.6 million domestically and $331.2 million in international markets, including China, which premiered yesterday. Dragon 2 is still yet to be released in Italy, where it opens this weekend.
