Busch Gardens Tampa has announced that a 12-year-old western lowland gorilla named Pele is pregnant and expected to give birth later this year.  She is expected to give birth some time in November.

Busch Gardens has taken part in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP).  The purpose of this program is to manage threatened or endangered, species within a AZA-accredited facility.

Pele has been at Busch Gardens since 2010 from the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas.  Once she arrived, she quickly became part of the gorilla troop.

All of the gorillas can be seen at Busch Gardens Tampa inside the Myombe Reserve habitat.  Pele will continue to be on exhibit until she gives birth.
