It has been officially announced that production of the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has begun filming in Australia.

Johnny Depp is set to return as the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow and will be joined by  Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men,” “Skyfall”), rising young stars Kaya Scodelario (“The Maze Runner,” British television’s “Skins”) and Brenton Thwaites (“Maleficent,” “The Giver”) and Golshifteh Farahani (“The Patience Stone,” “Exodus: Gods and Kings”). Rejoining the action are Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, Kevin R. McNally as Joshamee Gibbs and Stephen Graham as Scrum.

Here is a synopsis of what Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will be about via the official press release:

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

This plot sounds different compared to the rumored one that was going around of Bardem playing a captain who blamed Sparrow for the death of his brother.  This could still be part of the film, but not the main plot line.  Also note that there is no mention of Orlando Bloom returning as Will Turner.  Could he be out for this one?  Or could he possibly make a surprise return in Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales?  It looks like we will have to wait and see.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is scheduled to hit theaters on July 7th, 2017.
