After more than a century, The Ringling Bros. announced today that they will begin phasing out their iconic elephants in their acts.

The company said that it was decided to eliminate them due to public concern about how the animals are treated.

Feld Entertainment said that elephants will be completely phased out by 2018 and will retire at the ompany’s 200-acre Center for Elephant Conservation in central Florida.

We went and watched Ringling Bros. Circus Xtreme last month at the Amway Center and the elephants were such a small act that I don’t think this will really effect the outcome of their shows.  They have focused a lot on other forms of entertainment with their new shows, giving them a more Cirque feel than anything.
