Metal detectors were first installed on Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Studios Florida as an added security measure for loose articles. Universal had now added metal detectors to both Dragon Challenge and the Hulk roller coaster at Islands of Adventure.
There are several signs outside of the attractions warning guests to place all loose articles in their pockets and not to bring anything onto the attraction. The guests then proceed through a metal detector and then onto the coaster. Some guests are being wanded down at the entrance if they trigger the metal detector.
The metal detectors make sense on Dragon Challenge even more-so due to the incident that happened back in 2011 when a 52-year-old Puerto Rico man suffered a lacerated right eye when he was hit with a foreign object on the coaster. This was when the ride was Dueling Dragons and actually dueled, now after the incident, Universal stopped the dueling and the coasters are dispatched at random times.
Could these new metal detectors popping up be a sign that we could possibly get Dragon Challenge to duel once again? Here is hoping. After all, that is how the ride was designed.
For now it is just an added security measure that Universal is testing out and has not announced any permanent metal detector additions to attractions.
What do you think of metal detectors on coasters? Good or bad?
