Ever since Universal Orlando announced the addition of the new Volcano Bay Water theme park coming in 2017, rumors began swirling that Wet ‘n Wild, Orlando would close its doors for good.
The park confirmed today via their Facebook page that they are indeed shutting down for good on December 31, 2016.
Universal Orlando does own the land that Wet ‘n Wild, Orlando sits on so there is no telling what Universal has planned for that land. Another hotel? Possibly. It is an ideal location for another Universal hotel.
Excuse my horrible Photoshop drawing skills, but this gives you an idea of how big the piece of land that Wet ‘n Wild Orlando is. Red is the actual park plus the gigantic lake the park uses for wakeboarding. I’m not 100% certain that Universal owns all of the lake property as they only use a portion of it for the wakeboarding. The highlighted yellow areas is parking for Wet ‘n Wild Orlando that Universal also owns. So as you can see, it is a pretty significant piece of land.
As to what is going to happen with all of the water slides at the park. I would imagine some of them could be relocated to Volcano Bay itself and rethemed to their tiki atmosphere. We will have to wait and see as no details have been announced as to what water slides are coming to Volcano Bay.
Wet ‘n Wild opened back in 1977 under the founder of the SeaWorld parks and is considered by many as America’s first water park.
