Disney announced today that the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VIII and the latest installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise have switched release dates.

Star Wars: Episode VIII has moved from May 26, 2017 to December 15, 2017, and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” has moved to May 26, 2017.  The original release was set for July 7, 2017.

A statement from the press release issued by Disney reads:

“The move follows the extraordinary success of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ which was the first ‘Star Wars’ movie to premiere in December. In the popular holiday moviegoing corridor, it smashed numerous records, including biggest domestic and global debuts of all time as well as the biggest domestic second and third weekends, en route to becoming the highest grossing domestic release of all time with over $861M and the third biggest global release ever with $1.887B.”

“Star Wars: Episode VIII” will be written and directed by Rian Johnson and will begin filming next month in London.  Star Wars: Rogue One is still scheduled for release on Dec. 16, 2016.
