NBCUniversal Acquires rights to J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World franchise

Comcast announces first quarter earnings, praises Harry Potter for theme park growth

Wizarding World West officially Soft Opens at Universal Studios Hollywood

Things just got a lot more interesting in the Wizarding World as NBCUniversal announced today that they have inked an exclusive deal with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution for broadcast and cable network television rights in the United States to all of the films in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World franchise.

Beginning July 1, 2018, all eight Harry Potter films can be seen on NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment’s USA Network and Syfy in a deal that also gives rights to air the films across all NBCUniversal television networks. The agreement includes exclusive basic cable rights to the new Fantastic Beasts films, the first of which is due out this fall.

The partnership incorporates exclusive content and events for the Universal theme parks as well.

Via the official press release:

Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Japan can explore a range of new opportunities including fan events, movie screenings and promotional activities tied to the “Harry Potter” franchise and the upcoming “Fantastic Beasts” film series.

What is also interesting, is that a rumor popped up over the weekend of Dragon Challenge closing at Islands of Adventure.  Could we be seeing a “Fantastic Beast” attraction coming to Universal Orlando Resort?  The plot of land that Dragon Challenge sits on is massive and would be able to house yet another Potter themed area.  We will have to wait and see if this rumor holds any truth before making any further guesses.  But it seem Universal is far from done with the Wizarding World.

Stay tuned after the break for the complete press release from NBCUniversal!
