Disney reveals new rides and more at D23 Expo Japan
Late Sunday night, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek revealed several new additions coming to Walt Disney World and other Disney properties around the world at the D23 Expo in Japan. Disney revealed new details about Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Pixar Pier at Disney’s California Adventure and an all-new roller coaster coming to Disneyland Paris.
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway Opens Next Year
First off, we got a new piece of concept artwork (pictured above) and an opening timeframe for the upcoming Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway attraction coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Disney also gives us a better description of the attraction via the Disney Parks Blog: The fun begins when you see the premiere of a new cartoon short with Mickey and Minnie getting ready for a picnic. As they head out, they drive alongside a train and find out that the engineer is Goofy. Then, one magical moment lets you step into the movie and on Goofy’s train for a wacky, wild ride.
‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ attraction at Epcot will be a roller coaster
Disney released a few new details about the upcoming “Guardians of the Galaxy” attraction coming to Epcot. Disney officially revealed that the attraction will indeed be a roller coaster and that it will be “one of the world’s longest enclosed roller coaster.” We still don’t have an exact opening date for this new roller coaster other than it will be open in time for the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World Resort in 2021.
New merchandise for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
Disney revealed new merchandise that will be available for purchase inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge when it opens next year at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. Guests will be able to purchase gifts from a Toydarian, AKA Watto in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.
New details about the Star Wars hotel coming to Walt Disney World
Although not a lot was revealed about the upcoming Star Wars Hotel at Disney World, we now know that it will be attached to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Disney also revealed this cool new animated photo of what at least one area of the experience will look like.
New details about Pixar at Disneyland
Pixar continues to dominate the news at Disneyland, as Disney announced new details about Pixar Pier yesterday and a new float coming to the Paint the Night Parade at Disneyland. We now know that Pixar Pier will open June 23 at Disney California Adventure park and with the announcement Disney released new concept artwork of the entrance to Pixar Pier.
Disney also announced that a new float is coming to the Paint the Night Parade featuring The Incredibles. The new float will make its debut at Disney’s California Adventure when Pixar Fest celebration begins throughout the Disneyland Resort on April 13.
Marvel is coming to Disneyland Paris
Perhaps one of the biggest announcements out of the event was that Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at Disneyland Paris is closing for a Marvel overhaul. According to Disney, the new ride will be a “high-speed, hyper-kinetic adventure where guests can team up with Iron Man and the Avengers.
Disney also announced at D23 Expo in Japan that the Hotel New York at Disneyland Paris will be getting a Marvel makeover featuring Avengers, with exclusive artwork and a new design throughout the resort. This renovated look will make its debut in 2020.
Although not “new” news, Disney also touched on all of the new attractions coming to Tokyo Disneyland Resort, including the first-ever attraction inspired by Big Hero 6, a new expansion inspired by Beauty and the Beast, and a new version of Soarin’ coming to Tokyo DisneySea.
Hong Kong Disneyland is also getting a new attraction based on Ant-Man and The Wasp, which was announced last year.
