New Universal patent could bring Harry Potter wands to life in attractions

An interesting new patent has been filed by Universal that features a new “video game” style attraction where guests will be able to interact with experiences within the attraction

Here is a chunk of the patent found via Orlando Business Journals that gives you a better idea of the patent:

“The game is a series of puzzle rooms, and the actions that the players take within each scene or puzzle change the environment and allow different paths to be activated or different physical effects to take place.”

Now interactive games have been a part of theme park culture for quite a while, such as Toy Story Midway Mania, Men in Black: Alien Attack among others.

This patent takes those rides to the next level and will allow attractions to “provide the benefit of a dynamic narrative that changes in response to interest from the game players.”  In other words, the ride could change its environment according to the age of the riders in the vehicle.

What’s even more interesting is the patent is not for a gun or a pistol attached to the ride, rather it is motion based.  The patent conveniently also mentions a “wizard-themed game” with “wands.”  Harry Potter anyone?

“In certain embodiments, the score input may include input from external sensors that capture player motion, such as wand motion, and provide the motion characteristics as input to a score determination algorithm.” the patent reads.

Wizarding World of Harry Potter Diagon Alley WWoHP DA at Universal Studios Florida USF Harry Potter Talent - Phelps Twins and Bonnie are escorted by Thierry Coup and Alan Gilmore and Ric Florell from Hogsmeade Station to Diagon Alley Hogwarts Express, Kings Cross, Leaky Cauldron Florean Fortesques Gringotts Lobby

Universal has implemented interactive wands in both of its sections at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort, in which guests purchase an interactive wand and can walk around to certain areas of the theme park land and have it interact with their wands.  Could we see something like this integrated into the next major Harry Potter attraction?  Only time will tell.

Theme parks apply for patents all of the time, many of them not seeing the light of day.  So we will have to wait and see what Universal has in store for this new patent technology, especially considering all of the rumors that mention Universal is not done with the Wizarding World just yet.  The latest rumor being that Dragon Challenge is closing to make way for more Potter.

Would you like to see a Harry Potter attraction where you actually got to use wands?
