Universal Beijing Resort is now the most expensive theme park resort ever

After the incredible success of Shanghai Disney, Universal has taken notice and will be doubling its budget for its not-yet-built Beijing Resort.

The resort was originally announced in 2014 by Universal with a budget of $3.26bn, but will now be doubled to $6.5bn, with the majority of that going towards the entertainment district, and not so much the theme park. For comparision, Shanghai Disneyland Resort cost Disney $5.5 billion before delays.

Universal announced that they expect the resort to draw in 10 million visitors its first year, which is the same amount of people that visited Shanghai Disneyland in its first full year of operation.

Details are not yet known about Universal Studios Beijing park, but with this budget, it certainly has the chance to be the most elaborate Universal Resort ever. At least, until Universal Orlando begins its expansion on its recent land purchase. It was officially revealed during the Fast & Furious: Supercharged grand opening at Universal Studios Florida that Beijing will be getting a version of that attraction.
