Disney Cruise Line has officially named Academy Award winner and Disney Legend Robert Downey Jr. as the godparent of its newest and largest ship, the Disney Adventure. The announcement comes just ahead of the vessel’s highly anticipated maiden voyage from its home port in Singapore.
In a statement regarding the selection, Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences and incoming CEO of The Walt Disney Company, noted that Downey was a natural fit for the role. D’Amaro highlighted how Downey’s portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man helped define the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing to life the same kind of legendary storytelling that Disney Cruise Line aims to provide at sea.
Downey, who was named a Disney Legend in 2019, expressed his excitement over the appointment. He described the scale of the Disney Adventure as “majestic” and noted that being named its godparent is a significant honor. He joked that a “gargantuan blessing” is required for a ship of this size and promised to do his best in the role.
The Disney Adventure is a massive addition to the fleet, featuring seven themed areas that celebrate over a century of Disney, Pixar, and Marvel stories. Fans of Downey’s Marvel legacy will find several experiences dedicated to the franchise on board, including:
• Marvel Landing: Located on the top decks, this area features Tony Stark’s Ironcycle Test Run, the first-ever roller coaster on a Disney ship and the longest of its kind at sea.
• Disney Imagination Garden: This open-air hub serves as the stage for “Avengers Assemble!”, a live production featuring high-octane stunts and special effects.
• Marvel WEB Workshop: Located within the Oceaneer Club, this space allows young guests to test suit prototypes and train with Avengers technology.
In addition to these Marvel-themed attractions, the ship offers signature Disney hospitality, including Broadway-style entertainment, more than 20 diverse dining venues, and world-class accommodations.
