It’s official. Disney has finally listened to the internet’s collective prayers, and the results are, frankly, magical. After years of fan-casting and intense speculation, Kathryn Hahn has officially been confirmed to play the villainous, youth-obsessed Mother Gothel in the upcoming live-action reimagining of Tangled.
If there was ever a role that felt destined for an actress, this is it. Here is why the “Hahn-aissance” is about to reach its peak in the tower.
The news broke today, March 10, 2026, in the most Kathryn Hahn way possible. Rather than a corporate press release, Hahn took to Instagram (updating her handle to @motherhahn) to share a cheeky “Outfit of the Day” video.
The reveal? A vintage-style t-shirt featuring the animated Mother Gothel, paired with a bio update that simply reads: “mother knows best 🪞”. Disney Studios followed up shortly after on social media with the caption: “You want her to be the bad guy? FINE. Kathryn Hahn is Mother Gothel.”
While the internet has been shouting her name for this role since WandaVision, there are three main reasons why Hahn is the only choice for Rapunzel’s captor:
1. The “Agatha” Factor: As Agatha Harkness, Hahn proved she can play a character who masks deep-seated malice with a “friendly neighbor” persona. Mother Gothel requires that same terrifying blend of maternal warmth and cold, calculated manipulation.
2. The Vocals: Don’t forget, Hahn can sing. From the viral “Agatha All Along” to her performance in Agatha All Along (2024), she has the theatrical belt necessary to pull off a showstopper like “Mother Knows Best.”
3. The Comedy-Horror Balance: Gothel is a theatrical villain. She’s funny, she’s vain, and she’s genuinely scary when the mask slips. Hahn’s background in improv and prestige drama makes her uniquely qualified to handle that tonal whiplash.
Hahn joins a cast that is already shaping up to be one of Disney’s most interesting live-action lineups:
• Teagan Croft (Titans) as the spirited, long-haired Rapunzel.
• Milo Manheim (Zombies) as the charming outlaw Flynn Rider.
• Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) is set to direct, ensuring the musical numbers will be nothing short of spectacular
Reports suggest this version of Tangled may lean into a slightly “darker, more grounded” aesthetic while maintaining the beloved Alan Menken score. With Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) on script duties, we can likely expect a Mother Gothel who is even more psychologically complex—and perhaps a bit more “meta”—than her animated counterpart.
Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the 2010 original or you’re just here for more Kathryn Hahn villainy, one thing is certain: the tower has a new resident, and she’s going to be iconic.
