Tomorrowland fans, the wait is almost over. After a massive refurbishment that began in August 2025, Disney has officially announced that Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will reopen at Magic Kingdom on April 8, 2026.

This isn’t just a fresh coat of paint. Disney is calling this an “evolution” of the classic attraction, bringing 21st-century tech to our favorite galactic battle. Here is a breakdown of the major upgrades coming to Star Command.

1. No More Bolted Blasters!

The biggest gameplay change is the introduction of handheld blasters. For years, rangers had to struggle with the blasters fixed to the “Star Cruiser” vehicles. Now, you can pick them up and aim with much more freedom—similar to the versions at Disneyland and Shanghai Disneyland.

  • Always-on Lasers: No more guessing where your red dot is!
  • Feedback: The new blasters feature vibration and enhanced sound effects so you know exactly when you’re firing.

2. Meet Your New Recruitment Officer: Buddy

Before you launch into the Gamma Quadrant, you’ll encounter a brand-new character. Buddy, a support robot created by Imagineering and Pixar, will greet you in a reworked opening scene. He’s there to run final system checks on your vehicle and give you a chance to practice your aim before the real battle with Zurg begins.

3. High-Tech Targets and Scoring

The old static “Z” targets are a thing of the past. The new targets are fully interactive and will light up or react when hit.

  • Onboard Screens: Your Star Cruiser now features digital video monitors that track your score in real-time.
  • Beyond 999,999: Rumor has it the new digital system may finally allow scores to go beyond the classic “maxed out” cap.

4. A New Look for the Galaxy

The ride vehicles themselves have been completely redesigned with a sleek Star Command aesthetic. Even the exterior is getting a makeover, with a new Space Mountain-inspired marquee featuring a white spire design that fits perfectly with the modern Tomorrowland look.

5. Prove Your Ranking

Your PhotoPass photo is getting a major upgrade, too. The new on-ride photo layout will include your total score, your rank (from Space Cadet to Galactic Hero), and a breakdown of how many targets you hit. No more arguing with your family about who actually won!

Fun Fact: Keep your eyes peeled for “Easter eggs” referencing the upcoming Toy Story 5, which hits theaters in June 2026!
