Howdy, partners! If you’ve been missing the sound of those runaway trains echoing through Frontierland, it’s time to dust off your boots. After a massive, year-long transformation, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is officially reopening on May 3, 2026!
This wasn’t just a simple coat of paint. Disney has completely reimagined the “Wildest Ride in the Wilderness” with a total track replacement, refreshed trains, and some jaw-dropping new surprises.
What’s New on the Mountain?

The legendary mountain has been under heavy construction since January 2025, and the results are finally here. Here is what you can look forward to on your next trek to the mines:
- The Rainbow Caverns: The highlight of this refurbishment is a brand-new sequence inspired by Disney history. You’ll now encounter glowing, phosphorescent pools and shimmering stalactites that add a touch of mystery to your descent.
- Smoother Thrills: With entirely new track and updated ride vehicles, the experience is smoother than ever—though don’t worry, it still packs that classic Big Thunder “rattle and roll.”
- Enhanced Storytelling: Look out for extra details in the queue and on the mountain that dive deeper into the legend of Barnabas T. Bullion and the cursed gold mine.
Big News for Little Explorers 🎢
Perhaps the most exciting update for families is the change to the height requirement.
To make the mountain accessible to more young adventurers, Disney has officially lowered the height requirement from 40 inches to 38 inches.
This puts Big Thunder in the same category as Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Slinky Dog Dash, making it the perfect “next step” for kids who are ready to graduate from The Barnstormer but aren’t quite tall enough for Space Mountain yet.
Plan Your Visit
The wildest ride in the wilderness is back and better than ever. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or you have a little one ready for their first ride, May 3rd is the date to mark on your calendars.
Pro Tip: With the reopening and the new height requirement, expect Frontierland to be extra busy! Be sure to check your My Disney Experience app for the latest standby waits or Lightning Lane availability.
