The 2026 refurbishment of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom didn’t just give the ride a fresh coat of paint—it completely overhauled the scoring mechanics. If you’re still aiming for the same old targets with the same old strategy, you’re basically a Star Flyer in a Galactic Hero’s world.
Here are the top 5 tips to maximize your score and earn that coveted Galactic Hero pin.
1. Master the New Handheld Blasters
The days of being tethered to your Star Cruiser are over. The 2026 update introduced tethered but fully handheld blasters that you can lift from the holster.
- Continuous Fire: Don’t just click; hold the trigger down. The blasters now feature a rapid-fire mode that keeps the laser active, allowing you to “paint” targets.
- Know Your Color: Each vehicle now has one Red and one Green laser. Keep track of your specific color on the targets to ensure you’re the one actually landing the hits.
- Center Mass: The updated sensors are more precise. You must hit the solid black circle in the center of the “Z” to trigger the points.
2. Hunt the “Ring” Targets

The biggest scoring change in the update is the introduction of Illuminated Rings. These are random and temporary, so keep your eyes peeled.
- White Rings: These targets illuminate at random and stay lit until someone hits them. They are worth double the standard point value of that target.
- Rainbow Rings: These are the “Golden Snitch” of the ride. They appear rarely and only for a few seconds. Hitting a rainbow target not only grants a massive point payout but also triggers Bonus Mode for everyone in the immediate vicinity.
3. Don’t Forget the “Legacy” High-Value Targets
While Disney lowered the base value of the old 100,000-point targets to account for the easier-to-aim handheld blasters, they are still the backbone of a high score. Focus on these four classics:
| Target Location | Description | Pro Tip |
| The Orange Robot | Inner left hand/palm | Spin the car backward as you pass to keep firing. |
| The Claw | Ceiling of the first room | Aim high as you transition to the second scene. |
| The Volcano | Top-most target in the room | Wait for it to “erupt” for a confirmation flash. |
| Zurg’s Ship | The very bottom target | This is the highest-value fixed target in the ride. |
4. Exploit the “Bonus Mode” Window

When someone hits a Rainbow Target, the entire room enters a 10-second frenzy. The targets’ outer rings will begin to “count down” by extinguishing light counter-clockwise.
During these 10 seconds, every target in the room is worth 5 times its normal value. Stop hunting for specific high-value targets and simply blast whatever is closest and easiest to hit repeatedly. Volume is king during the countdown!
5. Play for the “Distinct Target” Bonus
A common mistake is “camping” on one target the whole ride. The new scoring computer tracks how many unique targets you hit throughout the mission.
At the end of the ride, a multiplier is applied to your “Variety Score.” If you hit at least 20 different targets during the experience, you’ll receive a massive “Completionist Bonus” that often pushes players from Cosmic Commando straight into Galactic Hero status (1,000,000+ points).
