SeaWorld San Diego’s All-New Shark Encounter Opens May 22

If you’ve been looking for a reason to head back to SeaWorld San Diego, we just found a big one. Mark your calendars for May 22, because the park is officially unveiling its reimagined Shark Encounter—and it’s sounding like one of the most immersive ways to see these apex predators in the entire country.

Whether you’re a die-hard shark fan or just looking for a cool new summer activity, here is everything you need to know about the upcoming grand opening.

A Whole New World Under the Sea

This isn’t just a quick paint job. SeaWorld has completely rebuilt the experience from the ground up. The journey starts with a walk through lush foliage that leads to a coastal beach scene. From there, you’ll head “underwater” into a winding cavern filled with state-of-the-art multimedia and LED technology that brings the story of the ocean to life.

The Famous Shark Tunnel is Back (and Better!)

The highlight of the exhibit has always been the shark tunnel, and it’s returning with a major upgrade. You’ll step onto a moving walkway that carries you through a transparent 180-degree underwater world. Imagine sand tiger sharks and blacktip reef sharks gliding just inches above your head—it’s the closest you can get to being in the open ocean without getting wet!

Meet 11 Different Species

The habitat is now home to 11 different species of sharks. Keep an eye out for the Australian leopard shark, an endangered species that SeaWorld is helping to protect. The exhibit is designed not just to wow you, but to educate. You’ll learn why these “misunderstood” predators are so vital to our ecosystem and what we can do to help save them.

Want to Get Even Closer? (The VIP Experience)

For the thrill-seekers, SeaWorld is offering an exclusive Shark Up Close Experience. It’s currently the only place on the West Coast where you can actually feed large shark species right over the water! You’ll join the zoological team behind the scenes to learn about shark diets and behavior while seeing the care they receive firsthand.
