Walt Disney World helped make a splash for a good cause this week, hosting nearly 600 Central Florida kids for The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon.
The event brought together children from five local nonprofits for a hands-on swim lesson led by around 100 Disney lifeguards, with a special appearance from Olympic gold medal swimmer Simone Manuel.
For many of the kids, it was their first time visiting a water park, making the day both fun and meaningful. Participants learned important water safety skills before enjoying Typhoon Lagoon as part of Disney’s Cool KIDS’ SUMMER celebration.
The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson is an annual event organized by the World Waterpark Association, with locations around the globe participating to promote swim safety. Walt Disney World serves as the largest lesson site in Florida and has supported the event for many years.
What makes this especially important is how practical these skills are for kids growing up in Florida, where pools, lakes, and beaches are part of everyday life. Giving children more confidence in the water can be life-changing, and pairing that lesson with a day at Disney makes it something they’ll likely never forget.
Manuel, who joined the kids in the water, said the event aligns with her mission of helping bring life-saving swimming skills to more people. The participating children attended through Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida, Girl Scouts of Citrus, Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida, ELEVATE Orlando, and the Alianza Center.
After the lesson, the kids spent the rest of the day enjoying Typhoon Lagoon with games, dance parties, attractions, and other summer fun.
It’s one of those Disney moments that goes beyond the parks. Yes, it’s a fun day at a water park, but it’s also about access, confidence, and giving kids a skill that can help keep them safe for years to come.
