We all know the feeling. You walk down Main Street, U.S.A., and no matter how many times you’ve visited Magic Kingdom, you have to stop to take a photo of Cinderella Castle. It is the ultimate Disney icon—a stunning reminder to believe in magic.
But have you noticed the Castle looking a little brighter lately?
Cinderella Castle has recently undergone a breathtaking refresh, and the story behind how it happened is just as magical as the result. It wasn’t just a simple paint job; it was a massive, collaborative effort that blended creative vision with complex, high-stakes logistics.
The goal for this refresh was to honor the Castle’s rich legacy while ensuring it shines perfectly under the Florida sunshine. Walt Disney Imagineering took inspiration from the original 1971 vision, selecting elegant shades that lean into fantasy. With deep blue roofs, enhanced stonework, and graceful gold trim, the team wanted to highlight the Castle’s beautiful architectural details.

Refreshing a 180-foot-tall icon while the park is still open is no small feat. The team—including Walt Disney Imagineering, Facility Asset Management (FAM), and operations—faced some incredible hurdles.
One of the biggest? The moat. To allow safe access for the crews, they had to build temporary dams and drain hundreds of gallons of water. Once it was dry, they maneuvered large boom lifts into the moat to begin the work.
Because the Castle is the heart of the park, they couldn’t just close it off. The teams worked closely with park operations to create a schedule where heavy equipment was carefully moved out of guest view by noon every day, ensuring that even during this project, guests could still capture that perfect photo.
By the Numbers
Just to give you an idea of the scale of this project:
- 180 feet tall
- 600+ gallons of paint used
- 7 boom lifts deployed
- 3 months of dedicated painting

For the team members involved, this was more than just a job. Nathan, an Associate Project Manager with FAM, shared how surreal it was to go from being an intern just a few years ago to helping lead the refresh of the most famous building in the park.
“Not every day you are told, ‘Hey, you’re going to change the look of one of the most iconic buildings Disney has,'” Nathan said. “That excitement hit immediately, and then very quickly, the weight of it.”
This project is a perfect reminder that the “magic” we experience at Walt Disney World doesn’t just happen—it’s the result of immense passion, constant care, and incredible teamwork from the dedicated cast members behind the scenes.
Next time you’re in Magic Kingdom, take a moment to admire those fresh, shimmering colors—and appreciate the hard work that went into making it shine!
