A new chapter is taking shape at Disney’s Hollywood Studios as construction continues on Monstropolis, the upcoming land inspired by Pixar Animation Studios’ Monsters, Inc. The latest details recently revealed at Horizons: D23 Disney Experiences Showcase provide a closer look at the story behind the land and what guests can expect when humans are finally welcomed into the monster world.
Disney Parks recently revealed that Monstropolis will be built around a major development in the relationship between monsters and humans. Once powered by screams, the city discovered that laughter generates significantly more energy, changing the way monsters view the human world. That discovery ultimately paved the way for an unprecedented invitation: humans will be allowed to visit Monstropolis.
At the center of the new story is H.U.M.A.N. Day, which stands for “Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice.” The event will serve as a cultural exchange between the two worlds, allowing human visitors to experience everyday life in Monstropolis while allowing the city’s residents to become more comfortable with their new guests.

Monstropolis is expected to feel like a functioning monster city rather than simply an attraction surrounded by themed scenery. New artwork shows a dense urban environment filled with storefronts, businesses, and recognizable locations inspired by the Monsters, Inc. universe.
Among the locations highlighted are Harryhausen’s, the restaurant made famous in the original film, and the Glob Theater. These locations will help establish the personality of the new land while giving guests plenty of details to discover as they explore.

One of the biggest draws of Monstropolis will be its signature attraction, which was originally announced as a suspended roller coaster inspired by the iconic door vault sequence from Monsters, Inc.
The attraction will take guests into the Monsters, Inc. factory and recreate the experience of being carried through the door vault. Disney has also revealed that the attraction will feature the first suspended coaster at a Disney park as well as the first vertical lift. Guests will be raised 4o feet into the air in 4 seconds before entering the door vault, echoing the way doors are transported in the film.

With construction continuing and more details expected to be announced, the wait to enter Monstropolis is becoming a little less monstrous.
It was announced at D23 that, while work continues on the door coaster, parts of Monstropolis will open to guests sometime in 2027.
