Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Starting in 2027, SpongeBob SquarePants will also be making a home aboard Royal Caribbean’s newest cruise ship.
Royal Caribbean has announced that “The SpongeBob Musical” will debut aboard Hero of the Seas in August 2027, marking the first time a production inspired by the Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical will be performed at sea.
The new show will bring the colorful world of Bikini Bottom to the ship’s Royal Theater, joining Royal Caribbean’s growing lineup of Broadway-inspired entertainment.

‘The SpongeBob Musical’ Makes Its Debut at Sea
Based on Nickelodeon’s popular animated series and the Broadway musical, the new production will follow SpongeBob and his friends as they race to save Bikini Bottom from destruction.
The story centers on SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy and other familiar characters as they come together to protect their underwater home from an impending volcanic disaster. Along the way, the musical explores friendship, teamwork and the idea that heroes can come from unexpected places.
Royal Caribbean says the show will be reimagined specifically for Hero of the Seas, featuring larger-than-life characters, colorful scenery, music and theatrical effects designed for the ship’s Royal Theater.
The original Broadway production received 12 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, and featured songs from an impressive lineup of musicians, including Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, and David Bowie.
While Royal Caribbean hasn’t revealed the complete song list or production details for its version, the show will draw inspiration from that Broadway production.
Another Broadway-Inspired Production for Royal Caribbean
Royal Caribbean has made large-scale entertainment a major part of its newest ships, with productions spanning traditional theaters, ice-skating venues and the AquaTheater.
Bringing The SpongeBob Musical aboard Hero of the Seas adds another recognizable entertainment property to that lineup, particularly for families traveling with younger guests.
The production also gives SpongeBob fans a chance to experience Bikini Bottom in a completely different setting. Instead of watching the characters on television or visiting a theme park, guests will be able to enjoy a live theatrical adventure during their cruise.
The show will be exclusive to Royal Caribbean’s Hero of the Seas.

What Else Is Coming to Hero of the Seas?
Hero of the Seas will be the fourth ship in Royal Caribbean’s Icon Class, launching from Miami in August 2027.
Like its sister ships, Hero of the Seas will feature a mix of attractions, dining, entertainment and family accommodations spread across eight neighborhoods.
Among the ship’s highlights are:
- Category 6: The largest waterpark at sea.
- Crown’s Edge: A combination skywalk and zip line suspended 154 feet above the ocean.
- Nine swimming pools: Including the new Coconut Cove and the adults-only Hideaway, which features two pools and a large swim-up bar.
- 28 dining venues: Including Orleans Parrish Supper Club and Royal Railway – Hero Station, an immersive train-car dining experience.
- Ultimate Family Treehouse: A three-deck family accommodation featuring a rooftop terrace, private whirlpool and dedicated teen space.
The ship will also introduce new hands-on cooking classes for families, adding another activity for guests looking for something beyond the traditional cruise experience.
