One of Disneyland’s most iconic attractions just got a little more magical.
When Pirates of the Caribbean reopened today at Disneyland Park, guests were treated to an all-new effect inside the attraction’s famous treasure grotto.
For the first time, riders will witness a pirate sitting atop a mountain of cursed treasure transform before their eyes from a living buccaneer into a skeleton.
The new figure was developed by Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development using next-generation Audio-Animatronics technology.
Rather than relying on a traditional figure, Disney combines a fully mechanical animatronic head with real-time front projection, allowing the pirate to transform seamlessly during the scene.
It’s a subtle addition, but one that’s incredibly fitting for Pirates of the Caribbean. Fans of the films will immediately recognize the nod to the cursed pirates who appear human in the moonlight before revealing their skeletal forms.

One thing we really appreciate is that Disney didn’t overhaul the attraction.
Instead, Imagineering found a way to add something new that enhances an already classic scene without changing what people love about it.
Pirates of the Caribbean is one of those attractions where even small updates stand out, and this feels like the perfect example of using new technology to tell an old story in a fresh way.
It’s also exciting to see the evolution of Audio-Animatronics continue. Disney has introduced some incredible figures in recent years, and seeing that technology applied to classic attractions opens the door for even more enhancements down the road.
If you’re heading to Disneyland soon, this is definitely one scene you’ll want to keep an eye on as your boat drifts through the treasure grotto.
