If you’ve spent any time at a Regal theatre over the last few decades, you know that the “feature presentation” doesn’t actually start with the first frame of the movie. It starts with that iconic rush of wind and the clink-clink-clink of a digital track.
As of Friday, May 8, 2026, Regal has officially debuted a reimagined version of its legendary roller coaster intro across all showtimes. It’s the modern refresh we didn’t know we needed, blending high-tech visuals with a heavy dose of nostalgia.
A Modern Spin on a 1993 Classic
The Regal Roller Coaster isn’t just a pre-show clip; it’s a full-blown moviegoing tradition. Did you know it first appeared in 1993?. It became a staple after a Regal executive saw a crowd actually raising their hands and leaning into the turns like they were on a real ride.
While we’ve seen updates in 2002, 2010, and 2015, this 2026 version is a true “evolution” designed to make the experience feel more immersive and uniquely Regal.
What to Look For (The Easter Eggs)
The new intro is packed with details that you might miss on the first ride. Here’s what to keep an eye out for:
- Nostalgic Callbacks: Look for the classic film strip coaster track and that signature fresh-popped popcorn ending.
- Themed Planets: The coaster now travels past three distinct planets representing the most popular movie genres: Horror, Family, and Sci-Fi.
- The Big Chill: Watch for the ICEE cup—it now frosts over as the coaster zooms past.
- Surprise Cameos: The new design makes it easier for movie characters to drop in for a visit (similar to previous appearances by the Minions and Zootopia crews).
According to Vikki Neil, Regal’s Head of Marketing, the goal is to further connect guests to the “thrill of moviegoing”. Beyond the thrills, the redesign allows Regal to better customize the intro for studio partners and new concession snacks.
With big titles like The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Mortal Kombat II hitting screens, it’s the perfect time to see the new intro on the big screen.
See you at the movies—and don’t forget to put your hands up!
