Behind every championship game, youth tournament, and massive sporting event at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, there’s a Disney cast member helping make it happen.
A new behind-the-scenes look from Walt Disney World Resort highlights the Sportscape team responsible for maintaining more than 30 athletic fields across the massive 260+ acre sports complex. And honestly, it’s one of those jobs most guests probably never think about until they actually see the scale of what goes into it.
The complex hosts nearly 300,000 athletes and 800,000 spectators annually across more than 50 sporting events every year, ranging from amateur competitions to professional showcases. That includes baseball, softball, track and field, soccer, and now even Banana Ball games featuring the Party Animals and Loco Beach Coconuts.
The Sportscape team handles:
- 17 multi-purpose fields
- 12 baseball and softball diamonds
- A baseball stadium
- A track & field complex
According to longtime cast member John Bolger, who has worked at Disney for 36 years and has been caring for the fields since the complex opened in 1997, the growth over the years has been incredible.
“I’ve been here since opening day,” Bolger shared. “It’s been amazing to see the growth of the sports complex from a few fields to the more than 30 we have today.”
And honestly, this is one of those very Disney stories where cast members genuinely seem emotionally connected to the place they work. Multiple team members talked about family ties to Disney and watching their own children compete at the complex over the years.
The team is led by Turf Manager and Horticulture Manager Maryanne Baglos, who emphasized how collaborative the operation really is behind the scenes.
“What we do here is truly a team effort,” she explained.
The article also highlighted preparations underway for this weekend’s Banana Ball events, which honestly feel like a perfect fit for Disney’s sports complex. The over-the-top energy, entertainment focus, and fan experience align really well with what Disney already does best.
As ESPN Wide World of Sports approaches its 30th anniversary next year, it’s interesting seeing just how much the complex has evolved from a smaller regional sports venue into one of the biggest multi-sport destinations in the country.
And while the athletes usually get the spotlight, this was a nice reminder that none of it really works without the cast members keeping every field game ready year-round.
