Disney Cruise Line Wins 13th Sustainability Award in Vancouver

When you think of a Disney cruise, you probably picture meet-and-greets with Mickey, incredible Broadway-style shows, and watching the sunset over the ocean. But behind the magic, there is a massive effort going on beneath the deck to keep those beautiful oceans clean.

Recently, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority awarded Disney Cruise Line (DCL) the 2025 Blue Circle Award.

Why is this a big deal? Because it marks the 13th time Disney has taken home this honor. The award recognizes cruise and shipping companies that voluntarily go above and beyond to reduce emissions and minimize their environmental footprint while docked in Vancouver.

You might wonder how a massive cruise ship stays eco-friendly while sitting at a busy city port. The biggest factor here is something called shore power.

Normally, ships have to keep their engines running even when parked to keep the lights on, the AC running, and the kitchens cooking. However, when the Disney Wonder pulls into Vancouver, it essentially “plugs into” the city’s local shoreside electric grid.

By utilizing shore power, the ship can completely shut down its main engines. This simple plug-in process dramatically slashes portside emissions and keeps the local air cleaner for everyone in the area.

Disney’s green practices in the Pacific Northwest are more important than ever because its local presence is growing.

For the first time, Disney will be operating two ships in the region simultaneously. The Disney Magic is officially joining the Disney Wonder in sailing out of Vancouver to the breathtaking wilderness of Alaska. Bringing a second ship into these pristine northern waters means Disney is doubling down on its commitment to portside sustainability and strict environmental standards.

This award isn’t a one-off stroke of luck. Disney Cruise Line has been steadily gaining recognition for its corporate ethics, recently landing at No. 7 on the Forbes Best Brands for Social Impact list.

As the fleet goes through a massive expansion—growing to eight current ships with five more planned by 2031 (including the highly anticipated Disney Believe next year)—balancing scale with sustainability is their main focus. From conserving energy and minimizing waste to protecting marine wildlife, the goal is to make sure the magic lasts for generations to come.

Next time you wave goodbye to the shore from a Disney ship, you can feel a little better knowing that the fleet is working hard to leave nothing but wakes behind them!
