There has been quite a bit of chatter online calling the new live-action Moana “colorless” and “lifeless,” but after seeing it for myself, I couldn’t disagree more. In my book, this is a genuinely fantastic remake that stands on its own.
It is worth noting that the film is almost a copy-and-paste of the original animated version. While that isn’t necessarily a bad thing—after all, the source material is beloved for a reason—it does make it a bit more difficult to review this version on its own distinct merits. It essentially acts as a direct mirror to its predecessor, which will likely leave some viewers wondering why it exists at all.

However, the experience of watching it is still incredibly rewarding, largely thanks to the commitment to authentic representation. Seeing actual Polynesian culture woven into the fabric of the film—from the traditions to the storytelling—adds a layer of depth and heart that makes the entire experience feel truly special. It is vibrant, earnest, and grounded in a way that feels meaningful.
If you’ve been on the fence because of the mixed chatter, I’d highly recommend giving it a chance. It’s a heartfelt journey that successfully captures the spirit of the original while allowing a new generation to connect with these characters freshly.
What did you think of the new adaptation—did you enjoy the live-action world as much as I did?
