Pixar is officially heading back to Italy, but this time, things are getting a little bit hairy.

Disney and Pixar have dropped the very first teaser trailer and official poster for Gatto. This original animated feature promises to take audiences straight into the feline-run underbelly of Venice. Along with the first footage, the studio announced some massive star power joining the voice cast: Mark Ruffalo and Laurence Fishburne.

Check out everything we know so far about Pixar’s upcoming cinematic feline adventure.

The Cast and the Crew

Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things, The Avengers) will lead the film as the voice of Nero, a scrappy black cat who has spent years navigating the winding canals and superstitions of Venice. Joining him is industry veteran Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix, John Wick), who steps into the role of Rocco, a ruthless local feline mob boss to whom Nero is heavily indebted.

If the creative team sounds familiar, that’s because Gatto is reuniting the heavy hitters behind one of Pixar’s most heartwarming recent hits. The film is directed by Enrico Casarosa and produced by Andrea Warren—the exact same filmmaking duo behind the Oscar-nominated, Italian Riviera-set feature Luca.

What is ‘Gatto’ About?

According to the official synopsis, Gatto centers on Nero as he reaches a bit of a mid-life (or mid-nine-lives) crisis. After years of running tricks in Venice and working under the thumb of the mobster Rocco, Nero begins to question whether he’s actually lived his lives the right way.

When a sudden quandary forces his hand, Nero has to forge a truly unexpected friendship. This new bond might just help him discover his true purpose in life—that is, if the chaotic, watery streets of Venice don’t get the better of him first.

The initial teaser trailer highlights this signature Pixar humor right away, introducing Nero and Rocco as they try to double-team and question another local cat in a hilarious, feline-style interrogation scene.

Release Date

Fans of Pixar’s classic animation style will have to wait just a little bit longer to see the full picture. Gatto is slated to release exclusively in cinemas in March 2027.

Given Casarosa’s stunning, watercolor-inspired visual direction in Luca, Gatto‘s depiction of a cat-dominated, moody Venetian underworld is bound to be a gorgeous theatrical experience.
