Disney is pulling back the curtain on something most guests never see but experience every day.
Across parks, resorts, and cruise destinations, Disney Experiences is continuing to expand its use of solar energy, turning sunshine into a major power source behind the magic.
Walt Disney World Leading the Way
At Walt Disney World Resort, solar power is already playing a massive role.
On sunny days, the resort’s four solar projects can generate up to 100% of its daytime energy needs, supporting everything from theme parks to hotels and transportation systems.
The newest addition is a 484-acre solar facility in Levy County, Florida, adding to existing projects like the well-known Hidden Mickey solar array near EPCOT.
The impact is significant. Each year, this level of solar production helps:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 140,000 metric tons
- Offset the equivalent of nearly 33,000 cars on the road
- Power around 19,000 homes
It’s one of the largest examples of renewable energy use in the theme park industry.
Disneyland Resort Expanding Clean Energy
At Disneyland Resort, the focus is on a mix of solar, electrification, and infrastructure upgrades.
Recent updates include:
- A solar and battery system powering Circle D Ranch
- A growing fleet of electric vehicles across the resort
- New EV charging infrastructure with 20 Level 2 chargers and a fast charger
- Solar panels powering attractions like Radiator Springs Racers
The resort now sources about 60% of its electricity from renewable energy, showing steady progress toward reducing operational emissions.
Solar Projects Across Global Parks
Disney’s international resorts are also seeing major solar investments.
At Disneyland Paris, a massive solar canopy project now covers more than 11,000 parking spaces, generating enough electricity annually to power a small town.
Meanwhile:
- Hong Kong Disneyland has installed solar canopy panels in parking areas
- Shanghai Disney Resort has solar panels across rooftops and facilities
- Tokyo Disney Resort continues to expand solar installations year over year
Each project is tailored to its location, but the goal remains consistent. Reduce reliance on traditional energy sources while supporting day-to-day operations.
Even Disney Cruise Destinations Are Going Solar
The push extends beyond theme parks.
At destinations like Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay, solar panel arrays are helping generate power while preserving the natural environments guests visit.
It’s a smaller-scale application compared to the parks, but an important one given the focus on conservation in those locations.
A Growing Shift Behind the Scenes
While guests may not always notice it directly, solar energy is becoming a bigger part of how Disney operates.
From powering rides and hotels to supporting transportation and infrastructure, these projects are quietly reshaping how large-scale entertainment destinations manage energy.
And as more expansions and updates roll out, it’s likely that renewable energy will continue to play an even larger role across Disney parks worldwide.
